Denmark’s Captain Dissents to Qatar Hosting the World Cup

The Danish men’s national team has expressed its support for the Danish Football Union (DBU). DBU, along with German (and other) fans, recently criticized the authorities on the situation over human rights abuses in Qatar. And now, after the football news of his exemplary leadership at the moment of Christian Eriksen’s collapse in Denmark-Finland in Euro 2020, Simon Kjaer, Denmark’s captain dissents to Qatar hosting the World Cup and expresses support for the DBU.

More than 6000 immigrant workers have reportedly died in Qatar since the country had been awarded the right to host the World Cup.

The Danish Football Union – DBU – has held several hearings on the human rights situation in Qatar so far.

They have even written urgent letters to FIFA and voiced criticism at meetings and conferences that FIFA authorities have attended.

People part of Amnesty International and the World Cup organisers have also been part of the audience in these meetings.

And now, Simon Kjaer has protested against the brutalities that Qatar is sanctioning and the World Cup is silent about.

Denmark’s national team captain, Kjaer, has voiced his concerns over Qatar as hosts in his statement for DBU’s official website.

“As captain, I have to say that we, the players, did not choose Qatar to host the 2022 World Cup. We are highly critical of the human rights conditions in that country. Of course, we wholeheartedly and strongly support the DBU’s criticism of Qatar,” Kjaer remarked in his capacity as the captain.

“We, the players, have publicly stated our position on the Qatar World Cup several times but now we must concentrate on the game – to qualify for the tournament and then allow the DBU as an organisation to fight politically off the pitch,” said the Denmark national team captain.
