Champions League Football Results – Chelsea Blew the Chance to Top

Among other of last night’s disappointing Champions League football results, Chelsea blew the chance to top their group, Group H.

This is partly because Zenit St Petersburg brilliantly held the Blues – current Champions League title defenders – to a 3-3 draw.

At the same time, as Chelsea secured just one point at the Gazprom Arena on Wednesday, Juventus triumphed in theirs (football today). The Turin club beat Malmo 1-0, which, with Chelsea’s draw, meant that they replaced the Blues as the group leaders.

This 3-3 result from yesterday’s football match thus sees Thomas Tuchel’s side – perhaps undeservedly – finish second in their group.

They have two points less than Group H’s winners Juventus, who won 1-0 in Sweden in the night’s other game.

Chelsea were dominant early on, taking a lead after just 90 seconds when Timo Werner tapped the ball in. He did so by following a Ross Barkley corner and from a yard out.

But Zenit fought their way back into the game. And their consistent pressure on the European Champions ended in two goals in quick succession.

Claudinho took advantage of the fact that no Chelsea player was marking him on the post to nod in an equaliser on 38 minutes.

Sardar Azmoun then added a second Zenit goal just three minutes later following a Malcolm through-ball. This clever pass meant that he was in an one on one with Kepa Arrizabalaga, and he scored for 2-1.

After the break, though, Tuchel’s side improved as they drew the game level once again at the 62nd minute.

Lukaku jumped on a Werner cross to score his first goal since the last time he played (the football news). Incidentally, this, his previous goal for Chelsea, was also in the Champions League, and also against Zenit, back in September.

Werner then put the visitors back ahead with five minutes to go, blasting a shot past Mikhail Kerzhakov. He was thus celebrating his role in all three Chelsea goals and an assured 3-2 victory that screamed top spot.

However, a stunning injury time half-volley from substitute Magomed Ozdoev saw Chelsea in utter shock as Zenit levelled once again.

This 3-3 end tally thus dropped Chelsea down to second place in Group H.
