Carlo Ancelotti and Karim Benzema Reacted to Real Madrid’s 1-2 Win

Head coach Carlo Ancelotti and Karim Benzema reacted to Real Madrid’s 1-2 win away over Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday night.

Real Madrid were missing eight players due to a COVID-19 outbreak in the club as well as suspended midfielder Casemiro.

And yet they managed to stretch their unbeaten run to 15 matches across all competitions. They are thus league leaders at the end of 2021, as they reached the mid-season break.

“It’s an important win against a difficult team at a fantastic stadium, they’re three points that are worth a lot in the table, but now we’ll rest and recover those who weren’t here today,” Real Madrid Carlo Ancelotti said about the 1-2 triumph.

“Today we’ve had two or three players who’ve tested negative, they haven’t had symptoms, so I think when we come back, they should all be ready.”

As we have mentioned, Real Madrid were missing the likes of Luka Modric, Casemiro, Rodrygo, Marco Asensio and Gareth Bale. Such absences handed Eden Hazard a chance to prove his worth to the team.

He made his second consecutive start after being out from the starting eleven for three months. The Belgium forward quickly found his stride to lead most of Real’s attacking moves.

Ancelotti added: “Yes, Hazard fits the team. Personally, he played well in this game. We had a doubt about the physical side but he did well, he fought, he’s back, yes, I agree.”

In this football match, all three goals came within the first 10 minutes itself.

Karim Benzema, whom the opposing home crowd also paid tribute to, scored a brace within the first 7 minutes. Oihan Sancet scored for hosts Bilbao at the 10th minute but this consolation goal wasn’t enough to overthrow the guests.

In fact, Benzema even broke the 400-goal mark in his professional career. His first goal was a stunning strike from just outside the box in the fourth minute. We then saw him adding another just three minutes later when an Athletic defender missed a clearance.

And Ancelotti said of Benzema, after the match: “What a forward, what a captain, a great player, a great man, a very strong personality, he’s very humble, he’s a top, top person.”
