Brazilian Footballing Legend Pele Was Discharged from Hospital

Brazilian footballing legend Pele was discharged from hospital on Thursday after two weeks of extensive chemotherapy for a colon tumor.

Edson Arantes do Nascimento — Pele’s real name – is without a doubt one of the greatest footballers of all time.

And he is the only player in history to win three World Cups (1958, 1962 and 1970).

He burst onto the global stage at just 17 by scoring dazzling goals for Brazil. He scored two goals in the final against hosts Sweden to win the World Cup. This was the first time, in 1958, that Brazil clinched the prestigious trophy.

Pele, meanwhile, went on to have one of the most storied careers in the sport, indeed, across all sports. As a matter of fact, the Brazilian had scored more than 1,000 goals before retiring in 1977.

The Sao Paulo hospital that treated him has announced that they’ve released the 81-year-old ex-player, aka “O Rei” (The King).

The Albert Einstein Hospital further said in a statement: “[Pele] is stable and will continue the treatment of the colon tumor that was identified in September of this year.”

Pele underwent surgery for the tumor on September 4. He subsequently spent a month in the hospital before they discharged him to continue chemotherapy.

This is the latest in a string of health troubles for the aging star, whose public appearances have grown increasingly rare.

In September, we offered the football news about his fast recovery from surgery.

Then, Pele’s Instagram announced on December 9 that he would stay in hospital for just “a few days” for chemotherapy. He ended up staying for two weeks, though.

“Don’t worry, I’m just getting ready for the holiday season!” he said in a message to fans.
