Guinea beat Malawi with a stroke of luck later on Monday in another Group B football match, also in Bafoussam.
Meanwhile, Zimbabwe had been under threat of expulsion before the tournament by FIFA. The governing body warned of a ban after the country’s government disbanded the Zimbabwe Football Association, upon accusations of fraud. But the government has deadlined to reinstate the association’s executive without any action in retaliation from FIFA.
On the other hand, Senegal are Africa’s top ranked team. But they had only 18 players available for their opening group match because of the coronavirus and injury.
Africa Cup of Nations Football Results – Senegal Beat Zimbabwe 1-0
Zimbabwe defender Kelvin Madzongwe faced backlash for blocking a shot with his hand in the penalty area. His hand, extending away from his body, saved a shot in a heartbreaking turn of events for his side. After all, they were on the cusp of an upset at the start of Group B action.
Senegal, despite a lion’s share of possession and opportunities, produced a tepid performance. Boulaye Dia thrashed a shot just wide of the Zimbabwe goal after 40 seconds.
And all this hinted that the match might turn out to be a one-sided affair. However, it proved anything but as Zimbabwe came within seconds of an unexpected point.
Mane had one enterprising move down the left flank, tricking his way past two defenders. But he then aimed his angled effort straight at goalkeeper Petros Mhari in the 24th minute.
Captain Idrissa Gueye had the best effort for Senegal seven minutes from half time with just the goalkeeper to beat. However, his first touch was too heavy as he steadied himself for a shot and soon the opportunity was gone.
With some 20 minutes to go, Senegal defender Abdou Diallo came close with a headed attempt from a free kick. But the ball flew just over the crossbar.
Zimbabwe had to restrict themselves to a handful of counter-attack chances and set piece opportunities. The best of these, their captain Knowledge Musona wasted by floating the ball over the top.
