Only a day after Javi Martinez was reported to be rejoining Athletic Bilbao, Hansi Flick reasonably thought that he was the unlikely Super Cup hero of Bayern Munich.
“Sometimes football writes these stories -this is a wonderful one,” head coach Flick told Sky. “Javi scored the goal and won the game for us.”
“There were rumors that he was in Bilbao on Wednesday; however, he scored the winning goal tonight,” he added.
In Bayern’s previous Super Cup victory seven years ago, Martinez also came off the bench to score an extra-time goal, as they beat Chelsea on penalties.
