The German fans’ association has called on the German Football Association (DFB) to boycott the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
“It was not just yesterday we learned about the inhumane working conditions during the construction of infrastructure for the World Cup in Qatar. The media reported 6,700 dead migrant workers on World Cup construction sites as of mid-February,” the fanreads.
“A worker from the Indian subcontinent dies every seven hours. It is too late to save these lives. But we cannot ignore it.”
The statement went on, “Sport unites nations irrespective of political, philosophical or religious views. It is important to maintain these ties and renew them. But this is not a question of politics and culture; it is a question of humanity and the right to life.
“We are well aware that many football fans are looking forward to the German national team games. We are also aware that the World Cup is a high point in the athletes’ careers. We are football fans and we love the sport.
“But there is nothing to justify the acceptance of human rights abuses in Qatar, their conscious support through participation in the tournament. The voices are getting louder and ProFans are clearly on the side of those who believe a boycott of this World Cup is inevitable.”
They then called on DFB to act: “We call on the DFB to refuse to participate in the World Cup in Qatar. A lavish football celebration on the graves of thousands of migrant workers – participation would be the end of ethics and dignity. We turn our backs on it with horror.
“Football is more than just a game. Football is also a corporate and social responsibility. We are sure that the example of Germany will be followed by others. If the DFB wants to retain any credibility left to them, they must withdraw from this tournament, and immediately!”
