At Besiktas, nothing is known about a possible departure of Wout Weghorst to Manchester United. Technical director Ceyhun Kazanci therefore understands little about the way the striker celebrated his goal against Kasimpasa on Saturday. That sounded suspiciously like a farewell.
Weghorst made it 2-0 on Saturday evening in the eventual 2-1 win and took ample time for a moment with the fans after his eighth goal in Turkish service. He grabbed the club logo on his shirt and made a heart with his hands. The striker also waved, fueling rumors of a departure from the club that is renting him from Burnley this season.
Besiktas’ stance
According to various media, Manchester United is busy with the arrival of Weghorst, but Besiktas does not want to know about it. “I don’t understand why Wout seemed to say goodbye to our fans,” Kazanci told Turkish Fanatik. “He is our player and his contract with us does not expire until the end of this season.”
“If Manchester United or any other team wants Wout, they will have to talk to Burnley first,” Kazanci continues. “Burnley will then contact us to discuss a possible transfer. Only when we accept will the contract be terminated. But otherwise he’s not going anywhere until the end of the season.”
Fanatik also spoke to Simon Cziommer, Weghorst’s agent. He states that nothing should be sought behind the attacker’s goal celebration. “Everything is fine, no problem. Wout just made a party of it,” Cziommer is quoted as saying.
However, Manchester United are reportedly close to signing Wout Weghorst. The striker is currently rented by Besiktas from Burnley, but Erik ten Hag sees him as a good pinch hitter. Manchester United would like to bring him in on a rental basis for the next six months.
Various sources mention the remarkable negotiations. The usually reliable English medium The Athletic, among others, writes that United is in far-reaching talks with Burnley. The Championship leader then brings him back from Turkey early and then leases him again, but this time to the number four in the Premier League.
