Giorgio Chiellini confesses he believed Roberto Mancini was crazy when he talked about Italy becoming the UEFA Euro 2020 champions. So, among news of football today, Italy’s captain Giorgio Chiellini thought Mancini was insane for wanting to win Euro 2020.
Italy’s team failed to even qualify for the 2018 World Cup when Roberto Mancini took over as the head coach.
In a defiant reversal of that, the Italian national team are enjoying an incredible 32-game unbeaten streak.
So, it’s not surprising that Giorgio Chiellini initially thought his national coach was crazy for dreaming of winning the Euros.
Now however, after Italy became finalists, Chiellini is pleasantly shocked to see he was wrong and Roberto Mancini was right.
So, now, he’s ready to face rival captain Harry Kane and an England team that’s not pretty, but sturdy.
The final will take place at Wembley Stadium on Sunday at 20:00, per UK time.
Chiellini Thought Mancini Was Insane for Wanting to Win Euro 2020
“It is a dream that we cultivated over three years and the coach drilled it into our heads until it became a reality,” Chiellini told.
“When he told us at the start to think about winning the Euros, we thought he was crazy, and yet we are right there on the verge and just one centimeter away from the trophy.”
He then revealed, about their journey so far: “We thought that we’d be facing France rather than Spain in the semi-final, as they were the big favourites, they had all the quality needed and international experience. I thought France were a step above the rest, so I had assumed our path towards the Final would be Belgium, France and England.”
Chiellini on England Rivals
While Giorgio Chiellini didn’t believe Roberto Mancini’s ambitions at first, now he’s excited to face England as finalists.candi
“I immediately thought England would be a serious candidate to win the Euros,” he said about their imminent rivals.
“They have quality and physicality, are solid and organised. They might not be easy on the eye, but they are hard to beat,” he remarked.
He then said: “They reached the semi-final at the World Cup, plus it was predictable England would be in the Final of the Euros, as they played six out of seven games on home turf.”
Chiellini on Harry Kane
“[Harry] Kane is a player I have always liked a great deal,” continued Juventus defender Chiellini.
“I remember one of his first international in Turin and he immediately made a good impression on me,” he added. “We’ve been fortunate enough to play against Tottenham, so I know him well.:
“England aren’t just Kane, though, as they also have exceptional players attacking down the wings,” he continued, however. “Their bench alone could win the Euros, as yesterday they had Jack Grealish, Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Phil Foden.
“It’s going to be a great game of football, neither side will be afraid and we’ll both respect each other.”
