Aston Villa looking to retain Ashley Young in an attempt to save millions

Aston Villa have already brought in a few significant signings this summer. However, it was rumoured Ashley Young would look for a move away from Villa Park. Young moved back to Villa Park on a free transfer last summer. And featured in 25 games across all competitions in the last campaign.

In that case, Digne would be Villa’s only senior left-back contracted for the 2022-23 season. After Matt Targett joined Newcastle United for £15million last week (8 June).

This had left Villa looking for a back up left back. Aston Villa’s record Premier League goalscorer, Gabby Agbonlahor suggested giving Young. And in the process save millions. He said: “All that will be happening is they will be negotiating the contract.

“I’m sure they will keep him. He’s so versatile, a professional and can still do a great job. I can 100 per cent see him re-signing.

“He can be cover for left-back, left-wing, right-back and as a number 10. He can play so many positions it’s perfect.

“When Digne is injured, he’s got a perfect replacement. Rather than having to go out and spend big on another left-back, he’s got one there in Ashley Young who can play everywhere.

“I think it’s a no-brainer and I’m sure they are just negotiating terms and it will be signed.”

In this situation, transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano has reported that there is a very good chance Young will sign a new deal.

He tweeted: “Talks in progress between Aston Villa and Ashley Young with very good chances to continue together next season. Discussions ongoing but feeling is mutual. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 #AVFC”
