Armenian Captain Sent a Message Refusing to Join AEL to Participate in War

Varazdat Haroyan’s manager sent a message to AEL owner Alexis Kougias stating that due to the current events in Artsakh, his client would not sign.

The message also claimed that this was because he was called to serve the Armenian army after the new conflicts in the Caucasus.

Haroyan, 51 caps, “Was mobilized, like all Armenian citizens under 40, and he is already in the war zone,” according to a message sent to Larissa’s owner, Alexis Kouyias, by his agent.

Haroyan, a 28-year-old stopper born in Yerevan, thus refused a transfer to the Greek AEL just for the reason of helping Armenia in the war, archyde.com writes.

Nearly 100 people, including civilians, were killed in fighting between Azerbaijan and Armenia on Sunday.

Nagorno-Karabakh is a breakaway region located within Azerbaijan, but is run by ethnic Armenians. It seceded from Azerbaijan in the war of the 1990s, but is not internationally recognized.

Meanwhile, Haroyan is an experienced stopper and the captain of Armenia. He played 52 matches for the seniors of that country and scored two goals. He also played for all youth selections.

In Greece, they are in disbelief because of such a development, but Haroyan is clearly not the captain of Armenia without a connection.
